There is magic everywhere. In the rubik’s cube, when I perform the proper steps in the proper order and it goes from a chaotic mess to a solved cube. In my Irish dance group, when my feet finally find the steps and gravity lets loose it’s grasp. In the bread, properly mixed and kneaded, which rises next to the stove.
I regularly have my breath taken away by sunrises and sunsets, blue skies, clouds, and sunlight through trees. I marvel at the red of the apple, the green of grass, and the curve of the reflection in the back of a spoon.
Today, there is snow. The first real snow of the winter. Flakes drift slowly from the sky and weave their way though the air before coming to rest on the ground. The ground crunches underfoot and shallow tracks mark the paths taken by those who have passed this way already. Snow is a beautiful, magical thing, and the weary world of final projects and last minute test prep is transformed by it. For just an instant, we are transported to a fairy world of white, to memories of sleds and snow days, cookies and cocoa, games of munchkin and magic.
I return to my to do list, the weight of empty boxes, waiting for check marks. So much to do…
But maybe, before I go, I’ll make a mug of cocoa.

Music! I didn’t mention music. That’s another wonderful type of magic in our everyday world.

The wonderful thing about this magic is that it is interwoven in almost everything. Make sure to add some maggots to your cup of hot blood!

Taking Stock is finished! The final two pages will post on May 26 and June 2nd. The end of the semester, travel, and a bout of COVID slowed me down, but it’s done.
Up next is The Missing Knife! The script is due for another round of revisions over the next few weeks, with new pages hopefully getting underway late June, early July.
