Sketch-a-day February

This is the third time I’ve done sketch-a-day February.  I did it first in 2010 because I’d just opened a deviantart account and I wanted to put some art in the empty gallery.  I’m not sure why I didn’t do it the following year, but I returned last year, posting on both the old deviant art account and on tumblr, and this year I’ve moved to tumblr exclusively.

It’s amazing how much things have changed the three years I’ve done this.

That first year I had a scanner in my dorm room and did all of my work on paper.  I knew tablets existed, I had never used one.  The second time my mac had died a slow and painful death and the I had moved to mom’s old laptop (which I’m still using now).  The scanner was still in the room, but hidden behind a set of drawers because it refused to communicate with the new computer.  I did all of the drawings digitally, and saw it as a daily assignment to practice using the tablet I had gotten for Christmas.

Both of those years I was in college, taking a variety of classes (heaviest on English and Theater) and to do the sketches more often than not I had to sit myself down at the end of the day and take time specifically to do a sketch.

Not so this year.  I’ve been doing a mix of digital and traditional drawing (more brush pen than anything else because I love that thing, but I’ll try to mix things up), and more often than not I’m sitting down at the lab scanning two or three sketches at a time, the question becoming not “what am I going to draw and when?” but “which sketch shall I post first?”

Funny how much more time you spend drawing when you’re working on an MFA in comics.
