Fantacon was great! I sold some comics and tea samples, but more importantly I got to hang out with CCS alumni and other cartoonists and meet lots of awesome people.
The table to my right was occupied by veteran colorists Tom Vincent and Kurt Mausert, and flipping through their pre-digital color guides and blue lines was fascinating and inspiring. I learned a lot this past year about traditional cartooning methods, and I worked on a project last spring where we tried to mimic different coloring methods within photoshop, but it was really cool to actually see Micky Mouse pages Kurt colored and labeled so that the colors could be reproduced by the printers, and then listen to Tom talk about different blue line reproduction processes he used and the variety of ways he approached coloring. I’m hoping to do a lot more color work this coming year, and this was an awesome mini-course in coloring history/methods.
On my left was a long line of CCS alumni and Steve Bissette. I had been planning attending this convention with one of my classmates and friends, but at the last minute his allergies got the best of him and he backed out. This left me hanging out with people I didn’t know as well, and while I’m sad that Ben didn’t get to come (we would have had a good time), it was a really great chance to get to know other people better. I’m a reserved, socially awkward person, but I enjoyed getting to know some of CCS’s alumni a little better and see some of the work they’re doing.
My favorite read of the convention was Chris’s H. P. Comicraft, which reminded me that I ought to actually read some Lovecraft someday and brought back great memories of the Cuthulu LARP and the Adventures in the 1920’s one shot I played in a few years ago (both games were partially homebrewed, so I’m afraid I can’t review specific gaming systems.) Jesse had some very cool robot stickers, which were probably the most looked at thing on the table. I didn’t see as much of Randall’s comics, but the sketches he was working on looked great and he also blogged about the convention. His blog has pictures, making his post vastly superior to mine, so visit his website here! Jesse and Randall are putting together a Super Nintendo Anthology, and while my first system was the 64 and I don’t have any SNES stories to share, maybe some of you do? Submit something! The original deadline has passed, but they are still accepting submissions.
Overall, fun convention. There are many more talented individuals who deserve to be written about here, but I’m still worn out and this will have to suffice. Thank you everyone who came by the table! It was lovely to meet you.
