Well. It’s been quite a week.
This one is very tired. She wants it to be weekend and thanksgiving break already.
She wants to sleep and eat food that she doesn’t have to make herself and which doesn’t come from the cafeteria. She wants all of her school projects to be completed and beautiful and awesome.
She also wants this comic to update and is getting annoyed at the artist for not being–
Wait. That’s me.
I’m sorry guys. Friday’s page is in the works, and there is no reason that I should not be able to have it up (barring apocalypse, crippling illness, etc). I’m really fond of this section of the story, so I hope you’ll stick with me. I was going to say that I was the worst person ever for having missed two updates in a row without giving you warning, but then remembered how many comics I read that go ages without updates. So I’m not the worst person ever. I’m just not the most awesome person ever right now.
I have some additional artwork I’d like to share as well, so maybe that will be a new vote incentive once I get it scanned. The lines are light, so I may have trouble getting a good scan, but it’s worth trying.
See, for one of my courses this semester we are doing illustrations for the pieces of literature we are studying and looking at how illustrations influence meaning. The book we just finished was Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
When I shared the concept of Emma with one of my friends last fall, his first question was whether it was anything like Alice. I said no, but that I could see where the idea was coming from. As I’ve engaged Alice more closely, I’ve noticed more parallels. Alice and Emma are, in a way, kindred spirits. They’re both fairly young girls who end up in worlds outside of their experience and all in all take things pretty calmly. Also, they both have powerful queens waiting to appear towards the end of the story.
But Alice lacks direction, and Emma has a clear goal. My fairyland will never match the whimsy and nonsense of wonderland. Dinah doesn’t go in with Alice, Andy is there every step of the way.
Anyway, I have Alice drawings. They’re in a much more realistic style, but I think it’s recognizably my work. I think I’ve seen Alice’s expression in the Cheshire Cat drawing on Emma’s face before. Of course, with the Cheshire Cat around, smiles switching faces would be an unremarkable and everyday thing. I’ll scan those when I get a chance.
