Tonight I’m going to talk about different comics and graphic novels that have had the most impact on me, in roughly chronological order.
1. Calvin and Hobbs.
There’s really nothing that can beat the pure awesomeness of Calvin and Hobbs. I started reading them in grade school and adore them to this day.
2. Castle Waiting.
Beautiful book. Really beautiful. The first graphic novel I ever owned, purchased while on a school orchestra trip. In the remainder of the trip it was passed to every passenger of the car. I got the second volume for Christmas this year and I’m savoring every moment.
3. Megatokyo.
My sister and some of our friends started reading Megatokyo before I did, giving me mismatched accounts of various characters and scenes, so by the time I picked up the first book I was thoroughly confused. I read the first book straight through twice so that I could get things sorted out. It’s the first webcomic I ever read, and through that I was introduced to #4.
4. Demonology 101
(And everything else Faith has ever written) I followed a link over from Megatokyo, and I devoured this comic. Faith is one of my artistic idols, and I credit her work for inspiring me to start drawing and scanning my own graphic novels. Those are stories for elsewhere.
5. Goblins
A friend of mine sat me down at a computer and went through half of the archive with me one day when I was visiting. I love this comic. Some days I laugh, some days I cry, but I’m never disappointed (except for when it hasn’t updated yet–then I’m sad).
6. Templar Arizona
One summer day I was searching Keenspot for comics that looked like fun and I opened Templar. I didn’t move from that chair for the rest of the day. I love this comic and anxiously await each and every update.
I realize that this list is incomplete and that telling you how I got hooked on the different comics probably isn’t the most important and awesome information I could share. I will revisit this topic and flesh it out a little more. Right now I’m falling asleep in my chair, so I ought to go to bed. See you all tomorrow.
